This posting is only open to permanent and time-limited Division of Health Benefit (DHB) employees.
Position Summary
The Data and Tableau Analyst position is in the Strategy & Analytics unit within NC Medicaid. Using a variety of tools, the analyst will provide reports/dashboards, data extracts, and/or analysis of output to support organizational objectives and operations. Working with business partners, the analyst identifies and defines informational and technical requirements which, in turn, drive the subsequent reporting solutions she/he develops. This position is an integral part of NC Medicaid's continued evolution as a data-driven organization.
Job Specific Responsibilities
  • Develop and deploy Tableau-based dashboards, visualizations, and other analytic solutions to support the decision-making requirements of leadership and staff.
  • Apply an understanding of data sources and healthcare management to help business partners identify reporting and analytic solutions to operational needs.
  • Collaborate with business partners to gather, define, and document requirements for new reports/dashboards or changes to existing ones.
  • Use SAS/SQL to query against a large, complex data environment to retrieve claim, encounter, member, and/or provider data based on documented requirements.
  • Advise divisional staff in understanding and utilizing solutions; help staff draw supportable conclusions and recommendations.
  • Conduct data validation routines within the team; document work procedures and methodologies to ensure consistency, reliability, and continuity of reporting.
  • Assist the database management team with issue investigation and resolution as discovered and requested.
  • Potentially prepare and present to various audiences, including divisional leadership, to explain analytical methodologies and data solutions/output

Recruitment Range: $51,895.00- $88,000.00
Salaries are based on education, experience, equity, and budget

NC Medicaid (Division of Health Benefits) is dedicated to providing access to physical and behavioral health care and services to improve the health and well-being of over 2.1 million North Carolinians on behalf of the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. NC Medicaid manages the state's Medicaid and NC Health Choice health care programs, pharmacy benefits, and behavioral health services.
On Sept. 23, 2015, the North Carolina General Assembly passed Session Law 2015-245, as amended, directing NCDHHS and DHB to lead the transformation of the Medicaid and NC Health Choice programs from a predominantly fee-for-service delivery system to managed care.

  • Strong technical skills with major relational database technologies such as SAS, SQL, or Business Objects.
  • Strong report and dashboard development skills with one or more business intelligence/data visualization products, including Tableau, Qlik, and/or Power BI.
  • Proven ability to retrieve information from a variety of sources using a variety of approaches and tools.
  • Strong analytical skills including data analysis, modeling, and mining.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of business systems theories, processes, rules, and regulations and how they apply to technology.
  • Experience with managing client data requests, issues, and problem areas; ability to fully understand and address them; ability to manage situations requiring complex communications for internal and/or external audiences.
  • Strong influencing, critical thinking, problem-solving skills; proven ability to develop and initiate creative innovations and solutions.
Management Preferences
  • Candidates with a Bachelor's in Economics, Finance, Mathematics, Management Information Systems (MIS), and Engineering or other quantitative discipline
  • Thorough knowledge and experience with SAS/SQL and Cognos/Tableau.
Minimum Education And Experience Requirements

Bachelor s degree from appropriately accredited institution in a discipline related to the area of assignment with three years of programmatic experience related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Degrees must be from appropriately accredited colleges or universities.
